On May 24, 2022, the Las Vegas Sun hosted its fifth annual Sun Standout Awards honoring Southern Nevada’s outstanding high school sports teams, athletes, coaches, moments and games of the 2021-22 school year. Hosted at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa’s Showroom, finalists enjoyed a private reception prior to the awards show where they mingled with their peers and enjoyed complimentary food and drinks. Throughout the private reception, finalists and their guests memorialized the evening with photos, boomerangs and GIFs at Desert Cactus Booth’s custom photo booth, sponsored by the Las Vegas Raiders.
Las Vegas Sun Reporter Case Keefer interviewed finalists prior to the show in the Sun Standout Greenroom, sponsored by the Las Vegas Aces and broadcast via Facebook live. This year’s awards program was presented by the Vegas Golden Knights, Henderson Silver Knights and Vegas Knight Hawks. Ray Brewer, Las Vegas Sun Managing Editor, emceed the event and highlighted the 13 award categories along with the 16 award winners. Finalists were given custom medals sponsored by Nevada Gold Mines along with custom Nu World Graphics t-shirts sponsored by the Lincoln Dynamic Foundation.
During the award program, the night’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year, Jeffery Morosini of Durango football and wrestling and Zoey Robinson of Boulder City volleyball, were each given a $2,500 scholarship to the school of their choice, from the Vegas Golden Knights, Henderson Silver Knights and Vegas Knight Hawks. The program concluded with a special appearance and formal address by Greenspun Media Group CEO, Publisher and Editor Brian Greenspun, as he presented the Hank Greenspun Lifetime Achievement Award to retiring soccer official John Kennedy. This year’s celebration was sponsored in support by Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, the Las Vegas Desert Dogs and the Las Vegas Aviators.
